Student start-up prize for electricity from cell phone cases
Their business idea for an electricity-producing cell phone cover has won five students from the Albert Schweitzer High School in Erlangen the 2017 German Business Founder Award for Students. The coated cell phone cover is designed to thermoelectrically convert heat into electricity.
According to the fictitious business model of the student team 'Kabibe', the electricity could be generated from the body heat in the trouser pocket and the cell phone could be charged as a result.
Digital business ideas also took the next two places: At the Schloss Hansenberg boarding school in Geisenheim (Hesse), the 'e-Braille' team developed a fictitious e-book reader designed to offer blind and visually impaired people a handy and inexpensive option for independent reading. Students from the Hans-Sachs-Gymnasium in Nuremberg want to enable nationwide Internet access with 'HotspotEverywhere', whereby users share hotspots on their routers and benefit from each other's bandwidth.
"There are many young people in Germany with creative ideas and the necessary entrepreneurial courage," said Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and patron Brigitte Zypries at the award ceremony. Around 3500 pupils in 824 teams took part in this year's competition. The winners receive management training and internships with start-up companies. The 'German Start-up Prize for Schoolchildren' is awarded by the Hamburg magazine 'Stern', ZDF, the savings banks and the car manufacturer Porsche.
