Siemens
Joint venture for smart grid expansion
Siemens and Allgäuer Überlandwerk (AÜW) from Kempten have founded a joint venture called 'egrid' to commercially implement the results of the joint smart grid research projects 'Irene' and 'Iren2' in Wildpoldsried.
In Wildpoldsried, the location of the two research projects, the amount of electricity generated from renewable energy sources is five times higher than the village's own requirements. During the term of the first project "Irene" (integration of renewable energies and electromobility) from mid-2011 to the end of 2013, Siemens and AÜW, together with partners from industry and science, therefore created a smart grid in the Allgäu community in order to balance electricity generation and consumption and thus keep the grid stable. This created the essential prerequisites for the new research project "Iren2" (sustainable grids for the integration of renewable energy systems), which ran from 2014 to 2017. As part of this project, the optimal operation of self-sufficient stand-alone grids and topological power plants was scientifically investigated and tested in practice. New types of grid structures and their operational management are being investigated according to technical and economic criteria with the aim of finding out how energy systems with distributed power generation and additional components can be optimized both technically and economically.
