Murrelektronik shows seamless approach

Plan and install more efficiently

Electrical automation technology offers great potential for increasing efficiency. Murrelektronik is therefore presenting a digitally and visually supported system that simplifies the planning and implementation of the electrical installation of machines.

According to Murrelektronik, the "uKonn-X" system is the first seamless, digitally and visually supported system with bidirectional communication between design, development, assembly and commissioning. It avoids installation errors and at the same time increases savings potential. "Our new digital solution can save up to 70 percent of time during installation and commissioning alone," says Dr. Paul Zeller, member of the Murrelektronik management board. "Our system also significantly shortens troubleshooting. We talk about 'seamless installation' in this context."

uKonn-X is a system that addresses all interfaces with products within electrical automation technology as a digital solution. The aim is to smoothly connect all parties involved - both human and product - throughout the entire product development process. The system is based on the digitalization of existing physical components and communication processes.

In the first expansion stage, uKonn-X works as follows: The commissioning engineer or installer of a machine uses a mobile scanner to read a machine-readable code printed on the Murrelektronik connectors. The digital solution uses the scanned circuit diagram and the 3D model of the machine on a touch display to show which components need to be connected to each other: LEDs light up on the corresponding fieldbus modules in the machine to indicate the assigned port. Once an installation step has been completed, the installer confirms the correct connection on the display and at the same time triggers the automatic documentation. In a nutshell, this means: take component or connector, scan, identify slot via LED, attach or plug in, confirm and trigger documentation. If changes need to be made to the installation, the installer or commissioning engineer can communicate these digitally to the design department using an integrated function. This supports development based on the installation, improves the design of the machine and ensures accurate documentation at the same time. The steps of the entire product development process are thus seamlessly and smoothly connected.

uKonn-X interprets the circuit diagrams and creates the Bill of Material (BOM). Murrelektronik assembles individual connectors and provides them with a machine-readable label. On request, the company can also supply the connectors sorted according to their position within the machine.

"With uKonn-X, Murrelektronik solves several problems in the electrical installation of machines at once, because this is still a complex, sometimes time-consuming, tedious and error-prone task: Even today, it is still necessary to read and understand electrical circuit diagrams, often several hundred pages long, and to transfer them correctly into a cabling system," explains Dr. Paul Zeller. "Sensors, actuators, switches, power supply units and much more have to be interconnected. This is why troubleshooting and correcting errors often takes more time than the actual installation and documentation." uKonn-X shortens this time, which also pays off financially because the installation and commissioning times are shorter and the system goes into operation more quickly. In addition, uKonn-X simplifies the process to such an extent that it counteracts the growing shortage of qualified specialists. "We have transferred decentralized electrical installation technology to the digital world and also made it intuitive for users with the help of visual support to ensure a new level of quality," summarizes Dr. Paul Zeller.
