The takeover of Melior Motion is to be seen as a strategic acquisition in the Industrial Automation division. In the course of the advancing automation of both simple repetitive tasks and complex assembly and manufacturing processes, Schaeffler intends to systematically expand the position of its Industrial division as a supplier of components and systems for robots. In the first step, a shaft gearbox with an electric motor and sensors for use in collaborative robots (cobots) was brought to production readiness. The second step now involves expanding the portfolio to include more powerful gearboxes for higher payloads in industrial applications.

The planetary gearboxes from Melior Motion offer advantages over the cycloidal gearboxes currently in use: among other things, the technology enables a higher torque density for faster movements, smaller installation space or higher load capacity. The smooth running of the planetary gears leads to significant noise reduction during operation.

In 2017, the Hamelin-based company Melior Motion launched a patented precision gearbox on the market, which is designed to enable particularly precise positioning and repeat accuracy even with high load capacities. Compared to conventional cycloidal gears, the technology enables, among other things, a higher torque density for faster movements, smaller installation space or higher load capacity. According to the company, the smooth running of the planetary gears leads to significant noise reduction during operation.

In addition to robotics, Schaeffler also sees growth potential in the areas of machine tools, medical technology, logistics and packaging machines.

Dr. Stefan Spindler, Chief Industrial Officer at Schaeffler, on the acquisition: "With Melior Motion GmbH, we are acquiring a highly innovative company in the field of robotics that is on a strong growth path. The acquisition complements our still young portfolio for actuator technology in robots and significantly expands our position as an innovative supplier in this important business field. We will also utilize the special characteristics of this portfolio as a user of robots in our 75 Schaeffler production facilities to increase efficiency."

The parties have agreed not to disclose the financial details of the transaction, which is expected to close by the beginning of February 2022. The closing is subject to the fulfillment of customary closing conditions.
