BMW and Jaguar Land Rover cooperate

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover are joining forces to develop next-generation electric powertrains. This step is intended to drive the further development of electrification technologies that are necessary for the transition to sustainable mobility of the future.

BMW has gained extensive experience in the field of e-mobility since the market launch of the i3 in 2013, while Jaguar Land Rover demonstrated its expertise with the introduction of the I-Pace pictured here.

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover share the strategic vision of environmentally friendly and future-oriented electric drive technologies. Cooperation between vehicle manufacturers and the joint use of know-how and resources is therefore important in order to successfully master the technological challenges in the future topics of automated driving, connectivity, electrification and services.

"The automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation. We see cooperation as a key to success - also in the field of electrification. In Jaguar Land Rover, we have found a partner whose demands on the future generation of electric drives are very much in line with our own. Together, we have the opportunity to meet customer requirements even more effectively by shortening development times and bringing vehicles and state-of-the-art technologies to market even faster," emphasizes Klaus Fröhlich, member of the BMW Board of Management responsible for development.

The cooperation will enable both companies to achieve economies of scale in the areas of development, production and joint purchasing. A joint team of experts will further develop the Gen 5 drive units in Munich. The electric drives will be manufactured separately at the respective locations. Both companies will take care to maintain their respective brand-specific core.

BMW has extensive experience in the field of e-mobility thanks to the independent development and production of several generations of e-drives since the market launch of the i3 in 2013. The Munich-based car manufacturer's electric technology includes an electric motor, transmission and power electronics in a single housing. This electric motor is characterized by the fact that it does not require any rare earths. Jaguar Land Rover, on the other hand, has demonstrated its own expertise in this technology with the introduction of the Jaguar I-Pace and its plug-in hybrid models.
