Over 22,000 vacancies in mechanical engineering
Over the course of 2017, demand for workers increased significantly, particularly in the mechanical engineering sector, according to the VDMA. The number of new jobs was higher than it had last been in 2007.

© Federal Employment Agency, Federal Statistical Office46% more mechanical engineering jobs were registered with employment offices in December 2017 compared to the same month last year. The number of registered vacancies to be filled was over 10,700. However, as only just under 50% of jobs for which a new employee is being sought are registered with the Federal Employment Agency, the VDMA assumes that there are over 22,000 vacancies.
According to the association, the trend for registered vacancies was steeply upwards in 2017. Employment also increased significantly after growing only slightly in the previous two years. However, it remains difficult to adequately fill vacancies: Vacancy periods for many technical professions are still longer than average. In some cases, the number of vacancies considerably exceeds the number of unemployed, meaning that there are too few potential applicants on the labor market in purely quantitative terms, according to the VDMA.
