More and more German start-ups are using artificial intelligence (AI) and/or developing products or services based on AI. This figure is 62% higher than in 2018, according to a recent survey by the appliedAI initiative.

The urban concentration of AI, together with the shortage of skilled workers, is increasingly becoming a challenge - especially for rural SMEs, says Andreas Liebl: "The number of start-ups can also be seen as a measure of the attractiveness of the local ecosystem, the availability of talent and experts and the innovative capacity of a region and its economy. The increasing focus on Berlin and Munich shows that many regions are struggling to create attractive framework conditions and really establish AI as a future technology across the board."
