A few geographical hubs continue to dominate the AI scene: the concentration on the cities of Berlin and Munich in particular is increasing: 86 AI start-ups (40.2%) are based in Berlin in 2019, making the capital the national leader (2018: 51). Munich follows in second place with 57 start-ups - in 2018 there were still 31 start-ups there. At €6.3 million, the average investment volume in Munich is almost twice as high (factor of 1.8) as in the capital at €3.4 million. Karlsruhe follows far behind in third place with 9 AI start-ups (4.2%) and Hamburg with 8 start-ups.
