Optical 18-bit encoder for continuous hollow shafts

Rotary encoder kit from PWB encoders simplifies the realization of positioning tasks. Under the designation ABG 26, the German manufacturer PWB encoders offers a ready-to-install rotary encoder kit for mounting on continuous hollow shafts.

It belongs to the group of single-turn absolute encoders and is particularly recommended for use in motor feedback systems and multi-axis applications in which the hollow shafts are used to guide functional components or have to accommodate additional add-on parts. With a resolution of up to 18 bits and an angular accuracy of up to 0.01 mm, it is also suitable for applications with increased requirements in terms of control precision.

The German company PWB encoders is not only a specialist in the manufacture of particularly compact incremental and absolute encoders, but also offers an attractive range of complete encoder kits in its portfolio. These ready-to-install kits usually consist of an optical or magnetic scanning module (measuring unit), a rotary or linear code carrier and - depending on the version - their own mounting element. The kit with the designation ABG 26 is currently developing into a bestseller in this selection for PWB encoders.

The ready-to-install ABG 26 encoder kit from PWB encoders is a bearingless absolute encoder system with optical scanning, round code disks and mounting flanges. It is designed for mounting on hollow shafts with internal diameters of 10 mm, 30 mm or 100 mm.

This is a bearingless absolute encoder system with optical scanning, round code disks and mounting flanges, which is designed for mounting on hollow shafts with internal diameters of 10 mm, 30 mm or 100 mm. As a singleturn solution with selectable resolutions from 13 to 18 bits and relative angular accuracies of up to 0.01 mm, it basically covers a wide range of drive and measurement applications. "We are one of the few manufacturers to offer such kits with an absolute encoder at the heart of the product range. Our ABG 26 encoder is particularly suitable for mounting on continuous hollow shafts that have cables running inside them, for example, or that serve as a carrier for additional attachments such as fans," says Stephan Roppel, Head of Development at PWB encoders. Typical examples of this include the cable-carrying hollow shafts of large torque motors or rotating rotary indexing and rotary tables. In the field of motor feedback systems and multi-axis measuring devices, the ABG 26 also scores highly in drive trains with shafts that reach speeds of up to 10,000 rpm and where the requirements for positioning accuracy are well above average.

Three interfaces and three sizes

The ABG 26 rotary encoder kit from PWB econders can be used flexibly in various industrial drive, measurement and automation technology systems. The smallest version measures just 40 x 36.5 x 13.8 mm.

The ABG 26 encoder kit is offered as standard with the BiSS (Bidirectional Serial Synchronous), SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface) and SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) interfaces. It can therefore be used very flexibly in various industrial drive, measurement and automation technology systems. The smallest version of the kit measures just 40 x 36.5 x 13.8 mm. Depending on the specific requirements, the installation situation and the dimensions of the rotating hollow shaft, the diameters of the moving elements (hub with code disk) can then grow to external diameters of up to 69 mm and 138 mm. The fixed sensor head, on the other hand, always retains its size. In terms of temperature compatibility, the ABG 26 encoder kit from PWB encoders proves to be extremely tolerant: it is designed for operating temperatures from -25° C to +85° C.

Advantages of optical scanning

Stephan Roppel: "Our ABG 26 encoder is particularly suitable for mounting on continuous hollow shafts that have cables running inside them, for example, or that serve as a support for additional attachments such as fans.

As with all optical angle encoders, the functional interaction between the code disk, which is provided with a high-precision pattern of transparent and opaque fields, and the light-sensitive scanning unit plays a key role in the ABG 26 rotary encoder kit. Powerful light in the blue spectral range is reflected via the code disk onto the photoreceiver and, as the shaft rotates, an unmistakable and very precise light-dark signal sequence is created, which is then processed further in terms of regulation and control technology. "The big advantage of the optical measuring principle is that it is completely insensitive to magnetic interference. When used in motion control systems with brakes, for example, this is of crucial importance. This is because external fields often occur here that can negatively influence or even damage magnetic sensing," explains Stephan Roppel. Thanks to its optical measuring unit, the ABG 26 encoder kit from PWB encoders is therefore ideally equipped to withstand interfering magnetic fields in the immediate vicinity.

Part of a growing family

The ABG 26 is part of a PWB product family that now includes eleven ready-to-install incremental and absolute encoder kits with optical and magnetic measuring units. As one of the German manufacturer's fundamental strengths is the realization of individual solutions, each kit can also be modified and configured to meet specific requirements. "Many customer inquiries and market requirements are constantly driving the development of encoders and thus expanding our standard portfolio. Our kit range is therefore also programmed for growth per se," says Head of Development Stephan Roppel.

As a complete solution, PWB encoders offers matching accessory modules for its encoder kits. In the case of the ABG 26, for example, the customer receives matching SSI, BiSS and SPI calibration boxes as well as pre-configured cable and screw sets. In this way, the manufacturer simplifies the installation and fitting procedure for the user.
