In collaboration with the wbk Institute for Production Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and an industry working group accompanying the project, the VDMA Industry 4.0 Forum has developed the guideline "Sensor technology for Industry 4.0 - paths to cost-effective sensor systems". The guideline consists of seven key questions that address fundamental and cost-determining issues, as well as five toolboxes that highlight technical options and solution approaches.

The aim of the guideline is to address the introduction of cost-effective sensor systems on a broad scale and thus provide many VDMA members with practical guidance. After all, sensors are one of the most important links between the digital and real world when it comes to implementing Industry 4.0, but the cost of industrial-grade sensor technology often makes it difficult to implement innovative functionalities.
