This year, 23 teams from the USA, China, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, France, Portugal, the UK, Switzerland and Germany took part in the international 'iCan' competition. For the third year in a row, German student teams came out on top. The winners came from the University of Freiburg, TU Ilmenau and TU Darmstadt. The aim of 'iCan' is to demonstrate the practical benefits of microsystem sensors and actuators for everyday applications with a functional prototype. The 'iCan' competition is a Chinese initiative that has already taken place for the seventh time. At 'iCan', the winning teams from regional competitions in China, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, the USA and Europe compete against each other. This year, the sponsors Miele & Cie and Dr. Fritz Faulhaber as well as the BMBF once again supported the German teams financially. In Germany, the national competition 'Cosima', organized by the VDE with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), serves as the preliminary round. 'Cosima' stands for 'Competition of Students in Microsystems Applications' and will take place this year from November 10 to 11 at the electronica trade fair in Munich. According to the VDE, there is still an opportunity to take part and qualify for 'iCan' 2017.
