4D-LiDAR for industrial sensor applications

Aeva, a Californian provider of sensor and detection systems, and Sick have entered into a strategic cooperation. The aim is to use Aeva's FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) technology in industrial long-range sensor applications.

According to the company, Aeva's FMCW-4D LiDAR technology offers advantages over other detection technologies such as cameras and conventional LiDAR sensors: For example, a better dynamic range makes it possible to detect targets with low and high reflectivity within the same measurement without unwanted side effects. This makes it easy to switch between indoor and outdoor operation for automated machines. Thanks to smart reflector handling, the technology also detects highly reflective objects such as safety vests, pylons and adhesive tape in the sensor's field of view.

"We are convinced that FMCW technology, with integrated speed detection and excellent long-range performance, will open up new possibilities for us and our customers in a variety of industrial applications that are challenging for conventional time-of-flight LiDAR technologies," says Dr. Niels Syassen, member of the Management Board and responsible for technology and digitalization at Sick.
