Inka Krischke,

Sensors plus evaluation unit for SIL 3 and PL e

To determine a safe absolute position, Pepperl+Fuchs relies on a combination of the 'PUS' evaluation unit with the 'safePXV' or 'WCS' sensors.

The non-contact absolute positioning system 'safePXV' from Pepperl+Fuchs requires only one camera-based sensor, as it uses multi-colored DataMatrix codes to create intrinsic redundancy. In linear guided applications, it offers millimeter-precise positioning over distances of up to 10 km. The 'WCS' path coding system for absolute positioning in outdoor areas uses a stainless steel code rail with cut-outs. In the safe version, two U-shaped read heads cover this rail, ensuring detection up to a distance of 314.5 m. The redundant signals from the sensors are processed and evaluated in two channels by the safe evaluation unit PUS-F161-B. As a gateway to the fieldbus, the device generates a safe position value and can also derive a safely monitored speed from this. The combined applications are certified in accordance with EC 61508 for SIL 3 and EN 13849 for PL e.
