Security analysis by the BSI

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has carried out a security analysis to assess the quality of OPC UA's security mechanisms.

By analyzing the security functions in the specification of OPC UA, the department for 'Cyber Security in Critical IT Systems' now confirms that OPC UA was developed with security aspects in mind and does not contain any systematic security gaps. In addition, a selected reference implementation was tested with regard to the implementation of the security functionalities. The OPC Foundation received a list of suggestions for improving the reference implementation, which, according to the OPC Foundation, will be implemented in an update.
