Microsoft supports OPC UA with its Azure cloud

Microsoft is making OPC UA installations cloud-ready by supporting the OPC UA protocol from Azure. There is also an OPC UA reference implementation for Windows 10.

Microsoft is stepping up its support for OPC UA: in future, industrial machines can be connected to each other via the cloud, controlled centrally via an encrypted connection and linked to business applications such as ERP or CRM systems. The machines do not need to be retrofitted for this. The existing security infrastructure - such as firewalls or proxy servers - can also continue to be used without reconfiguration. The benefits include shorter response times for maintenance work, less administrative effort and lower costs during operation. In addition, the OPC UA-compatible telemetry data sent to the cloud facilitates the implementation of Industry 4.0 scenarios, such as predictive maintenance, even if the machines are distributed across the globe.

Networking Windows 10 devices via OPC UA

Microsoft has also made a Windows 10-compatible version of the OPC UA reference implementation available as open source on GitHub. All Windows 10 devices can now be connected to other IoT devices via OPC UA.

OPC UA: interface to the digital factory

The OPC Foundation ensures interoperability and standardization in industrial automation. The OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) makes it possible to record, transport, model and semantically describe machine data. OPC runs on any operating system, can be integrated into existing systems and is easy to configure and maintain.

The close cooperation between Microsoft and the OPC Foundation is also reflected in the fact that Matt Vasey, Microsoft Director IoT Business Development, was elected to the OPC Foundation Board at the beginning of April 2016.
