Secure cross-communication for Codesys
3S-Smart Software Solutions has announced an extension to its Codesys Safety solution for the distribution of safety functions to various controllers.
Codesys Safety is a software fully integrated into the IEC 61131-3 development interface and certified by TÜV Rheinland for the development of safety controllers in accordance with IEC 61508 SIL3 or EN/ISO 13849 PLe/Cat. 4. The range of functions has now been extended by an important feature that has also been approved by TÜV: Safety controllers can use special network variables (Safety NetVars) to exchange safety-relevant data such as emergency stop signals. Safe cross-communication takes place via any bus with a secure network protocol. Secure Ethernet transmission is immediately available. Network faults are automatically detected by the system and lead to the safe status of the application. According to Roland Wagner, Head of Product Marketing at 3S, the new function enables machine and plant manufacturers to "distribute a more extensive safety application across different safety controllers, for example to avoid having to switch to a larger safety controller. In addition, mechatronic functional units with a safety component can be designed and assembled on a modular basis."
