Research network wants to bring robots into the skilled trades
A Saxon research association wants to increase the use of robots in the skilled trades and at the same time counteract the shortage of skilled workers.
Smart robotics should enable furniture production using remote-controlled milling robots, for example, Verbund announced on Monday. The control and maintenance of production systems by robots from the home office is also a possibility. "We want to have teams of people and robots working side by side in industry and trade. To achieve this, we need to develop new cutting-edge technologies and transfer them to SMEs," explained Ulrike Thomas from the Chair of Robotics and Human-Technology Interaction at Chemnitz University of Technology.
With their project, the Technical Universities in Chemnitz and Dresden, the University of Applied Sciences in the state capital and the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology have reached the final of an initiative by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. They are applying for 45 million euros in funding. The Saxon association is one of 15 finalists in the competition. It will initially receive 230,000 euros to develop a research and innovation strategy.
