Inka Krischke,

Minimizing Downtime with AI

Machines not only produce goods but also generate large amounts of data. This data can be transformed into actionable insights through AI, revealing specific optimization opportunities for companies. Sebastian Werler, Head of Product Management & Software Development Digital Business at Festo, explains how the »AX Industrial Intelligence« portfolio can help.

What is AX Industrial Intelligence?

With this offering, we aim to assist manufacturing companies in optimizing maintenance processes, avoiding unplanned downtime, ensuring product quality, and reducing energy costs. AX Industrial Intelligence is an umbrella term for various solutions: »AX Smartenance« combines maintenance and service management with a machine logbook in a web-based and mobile solution. With our »AX Solutions,« we enhance complex production systems with a holistic approach, for example, in automotive body-in-white manufacturing or end-of-line packaging. We combine our automation expertise with advanced AI knowledge and our customers' expertise for predictive maintenance, quality optimization, and energy consumption transparency. The »Festo AX Industrial Apps« standardize AI-based component monitoring, making it easily accessible.

What’s unique about the apps?

Installation, commissioning, and operation of the solution are entirely possible without AI expertise. This makes integrating AI-based maintenance software on the shop floor a quick reality, eliminating the risks of lengthy projects: the apps are available at a fixed price in various tiers per drive. »AX Motion Insights Pneumatic« is an industrial app for monitoring pneumatic drives, allowing early detection of potential failures or performance degradation in pneumatic components, enabling timely responses. The »AX Data Access« app serves as an IoT gateway to retrieve data from various Festo fieldbus components and make it available to third-party systems.

Which apps are planned for the (near) future?

At SPS, we’re showcasing the expansion of our »AX Motion Insights« portfolio to include the ability to monitor electric drives: »AX Motion Insights Electric« leverages the data-capturing capabilities of electric drives to provide detailed insights into the »health status« of electro-mechanical drives. Additional apps for standardized energy monitoring and the extension of our AI models to other automation components are in development.

What specific benefits can users expect?

The apps provide manufacturing companies with a straightforward way to reduce reactive maintenance through data- and AI-based approaches while increasing condition-based and predictive maintenance. Our customers have been able to reduce their downtime by up to 25%, decrease scrap by 20%, and detect and fix leaks early.

How are you presenting AI at SPS?

At the Festo booth, the complete AI-based Industrial Intelligence portfolio is on display. One exhibit dynamically demonstrates the functionality of our »AX Motion Insights« industrial apps. We also showcase our comprehensive approach with the digital maintenance manager »AX Smartenance« and our digital learning platform, Festo LX, for upskilling the workforce of today and tomorrow. In the »Festo AX Controls« theme area, we demonstrate how control, motion, and AI come together on a hardware device. A gripper exhibit illustrates how the famous »bin picking« task can be performed autonomously by AI without prior »teaching.« Additionally, we feature a virtual assistant as a »next-gen chatbot« to provide information for our customers.
