Phoenix Contact and Mauell agree on cooperation

The Velbert-based company Mauell is spinning off its network control technology division into a separate company in which Phoenix Contact is participating. The aim of the cooperation is to develop intelligent solutions for the energy market of the future.

"Digitalization in the energy sector requires continuous networking of energy flows and energy markets. Open software and integration platforms are becoming increasingly important for interoperable grid operation," says Bernhard Mecking, Managing Director of Mauell GmbH, which specializes in power plant, process and grid control technology. This prompted the Velbert-based company to look for a partner from the automation technology sector in Phoenix Contact. Current project plans of the newly founded company Mauell Netzleittechnik, in which Phoenix Contact holds a minority stake, relate to corresponding solutions with open source architectures, network and communication solutions as well as intelligent connection systems.

Ulrich Leidecker, CEO of the Industrial Management and Automation (IMA) business area at Phoenix Contact in Blomberg, commented on the cooperation: "We are delighted to have an experienced partner from the energy sector at our side in Mauell Netzleittechnik. This will enable us to align our automation technology with the PLCnext open control platform specifically to the requirements of intelligent energy networks."

Mauell, which was founded in 1957 and currently has around 400 employees in Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil and the USA, was acquired by Bilfinger at the beginning of 2013 for its expertise in control technology in order to round off its range of services in the power plant business in the direction of higher-value services. Following a management buy-out under the leadership of Bernhard Mecking, the company has been going its own way again since April of this year.
