Lukas Dehling,

The path to the cloud

The 'Progea Cloud.Databoom' solution is the result of a collaboration between automation specialist Progea and platform provider Databoom. As Markus Stadelhofer, Managing Director of Progea Germany, explains, nothing stands in the way of IIoT entry.

Markus Stadelhofer: "'Progea Cloud.Databoom' is the optimal solution for collecting data from automation systems using IIoT technologies and analyzing it in the cloud."

Mr. Stadelhofer, what was the motivation for working with Databoom?

Stadelhofer: Databoom is a young, very flexible company with experience in the automation sector. The cooperation is a natural consequence of the advantages of the other market. If Progea 's product fits Databoom's needs in terms of data collection and Databoom's platform perfectly meets the needs of Progea's users to bring data into the cloud, then it's a perfect synergy for customers.

What possibilities does the new solution offer?

Stadelhofer: A specific IoT driver makes it possible to capture information - from PLC controllers or fieldbuses, for example - and then transfer it to the cloud. The solution also supports automatic caching and data recovery if there is no internet connection. For users of Progea products such as Connext and Movicon, the new solution enables simple and fast cloud analyses.

Another advantage is that users looking for cloud solutions do not have to use different providers for connectivity, visualization and cloud analysis - which simplifies the entire setup. Nevertheless, the cloud platform is open for connecting other devices that use MQTT, PubNub or specific APIs.

Which applications can be implemented with Progea Cloud.Databoom?

Stadelhofer: All applications in which data from factories, plants or devices worldwide is to be collected and then analyzed via the web - including charts, trends, tables, alarms and user notifications, virtual measurements and displays as well as team dashboards.

The data is stored in 'non-relational databases'. What is this all about?

Stadelhofer: NoSQL or non-relational databases are specifically designed for big data and cloud analysis. The NoSQL database, also known as 'Mongo DB', is the best known and enables high performance in the management of time-series data with a very fast response time - especially when processing data in the cloud.

How is data security guaranteed?

Stadelhofer: The Progea.Databoom architecture is based on the Google Cloud, which means that encryption, security, data integrity, back-up and redundancy are guaranteed by the giant of the web. Progea.Databoom can be considered extremely secure. Users can still download or export data at any time.

How can the costs be scaled?

Stadelhofer: We offer different types of licenses for cloud analytics, including good scalability based on the number of signals and the number of dashboards managed. Other, customer-specific licenses can be offered based on specific customer requirements. For testing and evaluation, there is free access to manage up to ten signals with seven days of data storage.
