Siemens and BayWa

Andrea Gillhuber,

Pilot project on CO2-optimized production

Siemens and BayWa are driving forward CO2-optimized industrial production in a pilot project. To this end, they are linking the Siemens Sigreen emissions management software with the BayWa Carbon Connect emissions offsetting software.

In future, the linking of the two companies' software will help industrial companies to track emissions - from the manufacture of products along the supply chain to their offsetting. First, Sigreen will be used to determine the realCO2 footprint of a product along the supply chain, then measures for avoidingCO2 will be derived and finally, BayWa Carbon Connect will be used to offset currently unavoidable emissions by purchasingCO2 certificates from trustworthy climate protection projects. Only projects in whichCO2 is stored, for example in biomass or humus, will be selected for the pilot project.

The combination of the two software solutions should make it possible in future to pass on information about carbon offset projects along the supply chain to other companies. This is to be done without restricting the data sovereignty of suppliers and sub-suppliers. This will make it possible to digitally define and anchor uniform quality standards for carbon offset projects within a company's own supply chain. In future, manufacturers will be able to find out whether and with which projects their suppliers' products have been offset.

First use case at the Siemens plant in Amberg

At the Amberg site, Siemens is demonstrating a specific use case based on its own production: CO2 emissions generated during the project period from January 1 to December 31, 2023 through the manufacture of selected products from the Simatic S7-1500 controller family are being offset here. The emissions from the supply chain up to the factory gate (cradle to gate) are taken into account.

For the period 2015 to 2022, Elektronikwerk Amberg has demonstrated aCO2 reduction of 49% and has set itself the goal of becomingCO2-neutral by 2026. Emissions from the supply chain are also being reduced through various measures. For example, Siemens relies on sustainable materials and cooperation with suppliers to reduce the product-specificCO2 footprint. The plant received the World Economic Forum's Sustainability Award in 2023.
