Simple migration path to multi-core applications

Bachmann electronic is presenting the first member of the M200 CPU family with multi-core technology at SPS IPC Drives 2018.

The MH230 processor module should be available in series production from the 1st quarter of 2019.

According to the provider Bachmann, the dual-core processor module MH230 enables up to 50% more performance compared to the previous generation MH212 as a result of the Intel i3 dual-core (2.3 GHz), multi-threading and one gigabyte of NVRAM used. The existing application software is executed unchanged on one core of the MH230 module, so that the new modules can also replace older controllers in the field (repair, update).

The second processor core of the module can be used for new functions such as condition monitoring, audit trail or other computing-intensive extensions to the controller. "Applications that are optimized for the multi-core architecture from the outset can benefit from even higher performance gains of up to 100%," says Matthias Schagginger, Head of Product Management at Bachmann.

Bachmann has developed a migration guide to make entering the multi-core world as easy as possible. The system software also supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). This means that the operating system automatically distributes the tasks to the individual cores in the background and manages the hardware resources.
