Vaccine production
Biontech plans new plants with Siemens technology
Biontech and Siemens are further expanding their strategic collaboration for global vaccine production. A Biontech production facility modeled on the Marburg plant in Singapore is now to be built.
Automation and digitalization technology from Siemens can already be found at the Marburg plant of the biotechnology company Biontech. Now, further production facilities for the Covid-19 vaccine are to be built using Siemens technology, including a plant in Singapore. For this reason, the two companies have decided to expand their global collaboration.
In Marburg, Biontech converted an existing plant for the production of the vaccine in five months with the help of Siemens. As part of the cooperation, Siemens will contribute automation and digitalization technologies for production facilities, including design, simulation and engineering software as well as process control technology.
Back in May, Biontech announced its intention to set up a production facility in Singapore. This is scheduled to go into operation in 2023 and will be able to produce several hundred million cans per year. However, the production facility will not only manufacture Covid-19 vaccine.
Cedrik Neike, member of the Siemens Managing Board and CEO Digital Industries, on the collaboration: "Siemens and Biontech have been working together successfully for a long time. Biontech was the first company to launch a new mRNA vaccine together with Pfizer. Our technologies and many years of experience helped them to transform production in five months instead of one year. Now we want to transfer this success to other production sites together - and make the Covid-19 vaccine available worldwide as quickly as possible."
