Set to SMARC

The entry into the SMARC business is a small paradigm shift for TQ-Systems: Until now, the company offered proprietary formats for RISC CPU modules, but now it is relying on the SMARC standard.

TQ-Systems intends to offer SMARC modules with both ARM and x86 processors.

"Proprietary solutions still have their charm and benefits for a wide range of customers. However, we only cover around 15% of the market potential with them," explains Josef Fromberger, Head of the TQ-Embedded business unit. "Standards are also a good calling card internationally."

As CoMs generally require carrier boards - which have to be developed and manufactured - TQ is ideally placed to continue growing with this additional business. "We don't want to be just another SMARC provider," emphasizes Fromberger, "because we have a completely different starting position as an E²MS provider." Experience from the demanding vertical markets of medicine, energy and aviation is incorporated into the designs so that they can also be used there. "In addition, all of our products have full traceability in our own production facilities and sophisticated obsolescence management," adds Fromberger.

SMARC 2.0 is not a pure RISC standard, as x86 processors can also be used. TQ's first product takes advantage of this with Intel's Atom 3900 series (Apollo Lake I) - but an ARM module based on the i.MX8 is also set to follow soon.
