The embedded world Conference covers nine subject areas. We present the topics in loose sequence. Part 1: Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things is one of the most important areas of application for embedded systems. The devices and systems are connected to software that runs at the edge or in the cloud. At the embedded world conference, IoT architectures, management systems and applications will be presented, including trend topics such as smart city applications and predictive maintenance. The topic of sustainability will be discussed in the form of a panel discussion in one of the trade fair forums.

The first two sessions will focus on architecture and processes: It is about digital identities, trust and software management, orchestration and update processes. In particular, the combination of identities, trust and blockchain has recently become increasingly important in the IoT sector.
A lot can be learned from IoT applications that have already been implemented. That is why there are three sessions this year with application and experience reports. One session will focus on use cases in water management, highlighting the importance of IoT for the management of natural resources. The second session will focus on various wireless technologies such as 6LoWPAN, Wi-SUN and Mioty. They are used in smart city applications, for example. Finally, the third session comprises three presentations on the combination of IoT with machine learning, condition-based monitoring and autonomous energy monitoring for predictive maintenance.

The management of IoT systems is key to their operation in the field. A dedicated session will present approaches to data collection, reconfigurability and lessons learned from managing nearly 500,000 IoT devices in the field. The final session will deal with the topic of sustainability in the IoT. This will focus on sustainable product offerings and applications in the field of renewable energies. On the following Thursday, two classes will be offered, one on open source software for web-of-things applications (the MING stack) and the other on software fundamentals for edge processing.
