The development of node numbers in 2016

The Profibus User Organization (PNO) has announced the figures for nodes installed in 2016. Ethernet-based Profinet technology overtook Profibus for the first time. IO-Link recorded the highest percentage growth.

In 2016, 50% more Profinet devices were manufactured than Profibus devices.

According to the PNO, a record 3.6 million Profinet devices were launched on the market in 2016. This brought the total number to 16.4 million at the end of 2016, an increase of 28% compared to the previous year. At 2.4 million devices, slightly fewer Profibus devices were produced in 2016 than in the previous year. However, the total across all years of more than 56 million devices still represents a record. Of these, 10.6 million nodes were used in process automation systems. However, if the annual figures for the two technologies are compared, Profinet is clearly ahead of Profibus for the first time.

The total number of installed IO-Link devices is now more than 5.3 million.

The development of Profisafe, which once again achieved above-average growth of almost 30% with 1.55 million nodes brought onto the market and can now look back on a total of 7 million installed nodes, continues to be very pleasing. At 47%, IO-Link again experienced the largest increase over the year in 2016.
