With 2493 patent applications, Siemens is in second place after last year's winner Huawei (2485), closely followed by Samsung (2449) and LG (2376). The next European company is Royal Philips in 6th place with 1617 applications.

Over 25% of Siemens' patents last year were in the areas of Industry 4.0 and digitalization - the Group was able to register significantly more property rights in these areas than in 2017. Siemens also recorded a significant increase in artificial intelligence and cyber security. "However, our focus is not only on the sheer number, but also on the quality and broad regional positioning of our IP rights. Digitalization and the importance of the service business in particular make broader coverage necessary," says Beat Weibel, Head of the Patent Department at Siemens.

Siemens holds a total of over 65,000 granted patents. In the 2018 fiscal year, Group employees worldwide registered around 3,900 patents and submitted 7,300 invention disclosures. Based on 220 working days, that's around 33 inventions per day. Siemens employs around 43,000 people in research and development in 44 countries, including around 14,100 in Germany.
