German Telekom
Own smart speaker planned
Amazon has clearly been driving the market for smart speakers with 'Alexa'. Deutsche Telekom wants to get into the ring in Germany and is focusing on the data protection card, among other things.
Deutsche Telekom wants to compete with Amazon, Google and Apple in the home with its own networked loudspeaker. Similar to 'Alexa', 'Siri' and the like, the device will also have its own voice assistant that responds to the call "Hello Magenta", the Bonn-based company announced on November 13, 2017.
Among other things, Deutsche Telekom wants to score points with close integration with in-house services such as the EntertainTV television offering - as well as its infrastructure such as routers. The loudspeaker will connect directly to them to take calls. The Group also plays the data protection card: "The servers are located exclusively in Germany and are therefore subject to strict German data protection law."
The smart speaker is being developed with researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Oldenburg. They are responsible for the interaction of microphones and loudspeakers as well as the acoustics. Deutsche Telekom plans to launch the device on the German market in the first half of 2018.
Amazon has practically single-handedly established the market with its Echo speakers and the voice assistant 'Alexa'. Google followed suit last year with its rival 'Home' model with integrated Google Assistant. Apple is waiting in the wings with its HomePod speaker, which, according to previous announcements, will initially be launched on the US market at the end of 2017.
