IEC adopts Mini-IO from TE as standard

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has recognized the Mini-IO connector from TE Connectivity (TE), a provider of connectivity and sensor solutions, as an international standard (IEC 61076-3-122).

The IEC 61076-3-122 standard can be ordered via the IEC website. A preview is also available there.

IEC 61076-3-122 defines minimum requirements for miniaturized connectors for industrial applications and thus ensures safety through consistent performance and interoperability criteria. The requirements for connectors in industrial applications are high, as they are usually exposed to high mechanical stress from vibrations and fast movements, environmental stress from dust and moisture, and electromagnetic fields in harsh environments.

"TE is pleased that with the completion and publication of IEC 61076-3-122, the Mini-IO is the first standardized miniaturized connector for industrial communication applications for an IP20 environment. In addition to its special suitability for industrial applications in harsh environments, the connector's small dimensions enable smaller device sizes and thus a higher packing density in control cabinets," says Günter Feldmeier, Global Leader Standardization & Consortia of the TE Industrial business unit.

With regard to current applications in industrial automation systems such as Mechatrolink and Varan, Feldmeier adds: "The reliability of the Mini-IO in harsh environments has already been proven by industrial users. Now the standard opens up the exciting possibility of accelerating its use in other eco-systems."
