Bitkom Survey 2026
Divided Mood in Start-ups
A third of tech start-ups in Germany report an improved business situation, almost as many report a deterioration. Nine % expect a possible insolvency within a year. Only half would start up again in Germany.
The economic situation of German tech start-ups is assessed differently. 35% of companies state that their situation has improved in the past year, while 30% report a deterioration. For a further 35%, the situation has remained unchanged.
The assessment of the general startup situation in Germany is much more critical: 19% see an improvement here, 37% a deterioration. Nine % - around one in eleven startups - believe that insolvency is possible within the next twelve months.
The figures come from a survey conducted by Bitkom Research on behalf of Bitkom. 133 tech start-ups in Germany were surveyed online between calendar week 3 and 6 of 2026. The survey is not representative, but is intended to reflect the mood of the industry.
Ralf Wintergerst, President of the Digital Association, said: "Many start-ups are making progress, but just as many are struggling with the difficult economic situation. What would help everyone: easier access to public contracts, less regulation and more opportunities to use data for innovative services and technologies."
The founders were cautious about the question of location: 50% would set up again in Germany. 20% would prefer another EU country, 7% the USA and 11% another country outside the EU. Eight % gave no answer and five % would not set up again.
The respondents were asked, among other things, about changes in the start-up situation in Germany, the situation of their own company and whether they would consider starting up again.
