Keysight and Ericsson test Pre-6G

Keysight Technologies and Ericsson have validated the interoperability of a pre-6G base station with device prototypes. An analysis platform for decoding and evaluating radio signals in real network infrastructure was used.

Keysight and Ericsson have tested the interoperability between an Ericsson pre-6G base station (gNB) and prototypes of pre-6G terminals. This was based on tests in a real network environment with actual hardware. Keysight's WaveJudge Wireless Analyzer solution was used to decode and analyze the signals on the network and device side.

The validation shows that interoperability tests are already possible in an early phase of 6G standardization under realistic conditions. The cooperation will be presented at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2026.

Technical basics: cm-waves and 400 MHz bandwidth

Preparatory 6G systems focus on new concepts such as the use of the centimeter wave spectrum, channel bandwidths of up to 400 MHz, massive MIMO architectures and greater protocol efficiency. As early implementations encounter specifications that are still evolving, there is room for interpretation in design and implementation.

Interoperability tests between base station and device prototypes are therefore considered complex. Differences in implementations can cause performance deviations or signal problems, the causes of which are difficult to identify without detailed analysis.

Analysis on several protocol layers

The WaveJudge solution acts as an independent analysis tool for multi-layered evaluation of the radio signals from gNB and UE. It identifies deviations between expected and actual behavior and provides KPI data for evaluating connection performance. Developers can use it to test new 6G features and quantify performance gains.

David Bjore, Vice President and Head of RAN Software & Compute Platforms, Business Area Networks, Ericsson, said: "Achieving interoperability is an important milestone for our 6G program. By working with Keysight, we have been able to solve problems more efficiently and gain deeper insights into the performance of new 6G concepts."
