Integration of position control in the ACS880 frequency inverters from ABB
© ABB

ABB integrates position control into the ACS880 frequency inverters to meet the requirements of motion systems without external controllers. Traditionally, different devices are used for position control and for speed/torque control. Position control is often implemented with motion controllers, for which specific tools, user interfaces and programming languages are used. Servo controllers are also used in such applications, but the performance range of servo controllers is very limited at the top. The 'ACS880' with integrated position control is an alternative solution with a power range of up to 5600 kW. It has several pre-programmed functions such as homing modes, absolute and relative positioning, positioning profiles, position synchronization and fast reference position detection. The frequency inverter also enables encoderless positioning and regenerative solutions. The motion functions are available via a simple parameter interface. The functions can be modified and extended via IEC61131 programming with the help of PLC open motion modules. According to the manufacturer, almost every motor and encoder type is supported, as well as all common communication protocols.
