Secure Media Exchange (SMX) solution expands Honeywell
© Honeywell

Honeywell is extending its Secure Media Exchange (SMX) solution for industrial cyber security to protect against growing Universal Serial Bus (USB) threats. The new SMX includes patent-pending capabilities to defend against a wide range of malicious attacks on USB devices that disrupt operations. The advanced protection mechanisms complement the additional SMX enhancements for malware detection using machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). USB devices are a major gateway into industrial control system (ICS) environments. Previous security monitoring focuses on the detection of malware on USBs. Studies show a growing trend towards new USB threats that change the functionality of device standards. These malicious attacks on USB devices comprise 75% of the currently known categories of USB attacks. SMX protection includes Honeywell's Trusted Response User Substantiation Technology (TRUST), which enables personal validation and authentication. For USB storage media, technological layers such as ML and AI are used to detect newer malware to protect against such attacks. The current SMX version also includes centralized management for USB device visibility and centralized threat management for all SMX sites; new ICS Shield integration provides additional visibility into USB activity on protected endpointsextended SMX capabilities include on-demand versions, including portable SMX-ST models for operations personnel and ruggedized versions for hazardous area applications.
