IDS at the SPS 2024
Precise Even in Motion
IDS is participating in the SPS for the first time, with a focus on industrial image processing for robotics, process automation, and connected systems. One of the highlights at their booth is a ToF (Time-of-Flight) camera. Patrick Schick, Product Owner at IDS, shares some details.
Mr. Schick, what sets the new ToF camera from IDS apart from others?
Time-of-Flight technology itself is not new—but the sensor we use in this 3D camera is. We are utilizing a 1.2 MP onsemi sensor that isn’t even on the market yet. It delivers precise 3D images even under varying lighting conditions, whether the camera is used indoors or outdoors. In our demo, we’re showing that, thanks to the high frame rate of the onsemi sensor technology, the camera can also handle moving objects with ease. This means it can be used not only in a static position but also on a robotic arm, for example, in depalletizing applications. Another possible use would be mounting it on a forklift for package handling. Its compact design and IP67 protection are also definite advantages.
What is IDS's goal with this 3D camera?
Our ‘Ensenso 3D’ product line has offered stereo vision technology for industrial use for many years. With this camera, we are expanding our offerings by making an additional technology available and broadening our product range in the entry-level segment. It will operate according to standard protocols, such as with our ‘IDS peak SDK.’ As is clearly visible here at SPS, robotics remains a major trend in automation. A primary goal is definitely to make 3D vision accessible to additional target groups and application areas.
What are the next steps?
We are currently presenting a prototype here. This 3D camera is very new and was introduced for the first time just four weeks ago at the ‘Vision’ trade show in Stuttgart. Even then, many visitors wanted to place an order for it directly at the booth. So, we can already tell that we’re hitting the mark. As soon as the onsemi sensor is officially released, we will begin mass production of our ToF camera. Our team is, of course, already happy to explain its capabilities and potential applications.
