Industry 4.0
Successfully networked! Successfully networked?
The term was used for the first time at the Hannover Messe 2011 and has since shaped the development of automation technology like no other before: Industry 4.0.
The term quickly became an international buzzword with numerous interpretations, but the end result was always the smart factory as a desirable goal.
Now, almost nine years later, we are a good step further, as the Industry 4.0 organizational concept is being implemented in practice. IoT platforms are increasingly emerging as an important building block of the smart factory. Not only do they connect intelligent components with each other as the linchpin, but also with the corresponding applications. Klaus-Dieter Walter, CEO at SSV, explains the ideal components of such a platform and what users need to look out for.
What would a smart factory be without artificial intelligence? With the advent of neural networks and machine learning algorithms in safety-critical applications in industrial environments, completely new fields of application are emerging. Fraunhofer IPA has prepared a list of these and the associated challenges for us.
However, digitalization and networking are also transforming familiar components. Formerly analog components are becoming digital. This evolution can be observed in measurement technology, for example, and frequently in sensors. Piezoelectric sensors are one example of this. The crux of this digital transformation is not necessarily to be found in the measuring principle, but in the data transmission rate. Nothing can be transmitted as quickly as an analog measurement signal, says Stefan Affeltranger from Kistler. In the article 'Between analog and digital', he shows how fast data exchange can be achieved.
This is just a brief outline of the opportunities that arise from the digital transformation.
