Shortage of materials in the industry eases
The shortage of materials in German industry has eased somewhat, reports the Ifo Institute in Munich. However, it is not clear whether this is a trend reversal.
In January, 67.3% of companies surveyed by the Munich-based Ifo Institute were still complaining about problems with the procurement of parts and materials. In December, the figure was 81.9% of the approximately 2,300 companies regularly surveyed.
However, the head of the Ifo surveys, Klaus Wohlrabe, does not want to give the all-clear just yet: "It is not yet clear whether this is a trend reversal," he emphasized. "Despite this development, many companies are still worried."
The shortage of materials remains particularly high among manufacturers of electrical equipment, where 89.6% are complaining of shortages. The figure for printing products and data processing equipment is 82.5% each. In the mechanical engineering and automotive industries, both of which are important for Germany, the rate fell by more than 10 percentage points. In the automotive industry from 92.9% to 77.9% in mechanical engineering from 91% to 80.6%.
