Lutz-Jesco on International Women's Day
"The technology sector needs more female engineers"
The list of beliefs that make it difficult for many women with a passion for technology to enter the male-dominated technology sector is long. Yet the reality is usually much more progressive, says a female engineer from Lutz-Jesco.
"Women are given quite a distorted image in the media and society from an early age, which in most cases does not correspond to reality," emphasizes Lisa Kagerbauer, engineer at pump and dosing specialist Lutz-Jesco from Wertheim, on the occasion of International Women's Day. "The idea that women have to constantly assert themselves in the technology sector doesn't correspond to my reality."
"What counts is performance, not gender."
Even during her studies, Kagerbauer had only positive experiences, and there was no trace of prejudice or unequal treatment at university. "I studied with two female professors who were competent and recognized experts in their fields."
And when she started her career? Gender was not an issue there either. "As a woman fresh out of university, I was appreciated and supported right from the start." Many older colleagues were enthusiastic about how passionate she was about technology and shared their knowledge and experience as a matter of course.
In times of a rampant shortage of young talent, Kagerbauer believes it is important that women also enter the technology sector. However, they are still underrepresented, as figures from the Federal Statistical Office show. According to these figures, the proportion of women in technical research and development in 2023 was just 18%.
"In my opinion, it is important for the future of Germany that more young female employees contribute their potential to the technology sector," says Kagerbauer. She therefore gives interested women the following tip: "Don't be shy and make your way. The men are usually on your side. And be self-confident in salary negotiations. Make realistic demands and never sell yourself short."
At Lutz-Jesco, Kagerbauer and her team in the System and Process Technology department develop water treatment plants for industry and sewage treatment plants.
