New outfit for rectangular connectors
The previous design of the Epic rectangular connector housings from the HB and HA series dates back to the 1960s - basic geometry and therefore quite angular. Now Lapp is launching a smart redesign on the market.
"We want to get our customers excited about Epic again with a whole package of measures and are sure that they will order everything from a single source again in future - not just cables, but also the matching connectors," says Martin Hoffmann Vicente, the responsible product manager at Lapp.
First of all, the design was refreshed together with an industrial designer and the company's internal development department: the corners at the front and rear were flattened and deeper ribs were drawn on the front sides. This makes the rectangular connector easier to grip and prevents it from slipping out of the hand during assembly if the fitter has oily fingers. The functional surfaces - the holes for inserting the cables and the bolts - remain unchanged, as does the powder-coated die-cast aluminum material.
The supply chains have also been optimized. Previously, there were several different suppliers for raw grommets, coatings and threads. Now everything is supplied from a single source to Lapp for final production, where only the customized cable entries are milled and bolts are set.
New tools were purchased for this final production process at the Stuttgart plant, which are faster, more flexible and therefore more efficient. The redesigned Epic rectangular connector housing is compatible with other manufacturers and can therefore also fully replace older applications and competitor products.
The first HB-16 Epic rectangular connector housings will be launched in the summer. The entire HB and HA series will be converted to the new design by the end of 2024.
