Encoder offers multiturn absolute value position
Kollmorgen launches the 'SFD-M' (Smart Feedback Device, Multi-Turn) on the market. It provides machine builders with high-resolution multi-turn feedback with absolute position information that is available at system startup.
The SFD-M absolute multiturn encoder was developed for 'AKD' and 'AKD2G' drives and can be integrated into servomotors with Kollmorgen housings at no extra cost. According to Kollmorgen, it offers multiturn performance, four times higher positioning accuracy and fifty times lower EMF noise than the absolute singleturn encoder 'SFD-3'. The encoder measures the position of the rotor shaft during each 360º revolution, without the need for a reference as a starting position, and records the total number of revolutions the shaft has traveled in both directions. This absolute multi-turn positioning capability is ideal for applications where precise position tracking is required over large rotational distances, such as machine tool positioning, packaging machines, material handling, satellite tracking and many other applications. In addition, the encoder retains absolute position information in real time even when the system is switched off, so that no time-consuming referencing sequences are required at start-up. In addition, the encoder uses energy harvesting technology to provide reliable position data without batteries or gears.
