Intel completes acquisition of Mobileye
Intel has acquired 84% of Mobileye's ordinary shares, thereby completing the takeover of the Israeli company announced in the spring. The purchase price was around 15 billion US dollars.
"Together with Mobileye, we will create the technological foundation that will enable the automotive industry to take the next step into the autonomous future," explained Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel. The beneficiary of this technology is BMW - the car manufacturer, Intel and Mobileye as well as the suppliers Continental and Delphi are jointly developing solutions for autonomous driving.
As a next step after the takeover, Intel now wants to convert 100 vehicles from various manufacturers so that they meet autonomy level 4 according to SAE. This means that the vehicle drives fully automatically. If the system can no longer cope with the driving tasks, the driver can be asked to take over. The plan is for some of the 100 test vehicles to be used on the roads of Israel, the USA and Europe this year in order to test the technology, road conditions and the adaptation of the various traffic regulations.
