According to the Jugend forscht foundation, young researchers do not have to be another Einstein to take part in the competition, but they do have to be passionate about researching, inventing and experimenting. They can register up to the age of 21. Younger pupils must be in at least fourth grade in the year of registration. Students must be in their first year of study at the most. The deadline for these requirements is December 31, 2017. Individuals as well as teams of two or three are eligible. Registration for the new round is possible until November 30, 2017. There are no predefined tasks in the competition. Participants are free to choose their own research topic. As in the previous round, however, it is important that the question can be assigned to one of the seven Jugend-forscht subject areas: Working World, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, Mathematics / Computer Science, Physics and Technology.

The topic and a brief description of the project are sufficient to register online. In January 2018, participants must submit a written elaboration. The regional competitions will then start nationwide from February. Those who win here will compete at state level. There, the best will qualify for the national final at the end of May 2018. Cash and non-cash prizes with a total value of over one million euros will be awarded at all three competition levels.
