Germany's most popular employers

Glassdoor - the American equivalent of Kununu - has identified the best employers in Germany for 2019, based on anonymous feedback from employees over the past twelve months.

The Walldorf-based software manufacturer SAP was voted the best employer in Germany by users of the Glassdoor employer rating platform.

The ranking is based on the average overall rating of employers within the last year (ratings on a five-point scale: 1 = very dissatisfied; 3 = okay; 5 = very satisfied). Glassdoor users voted for the ten best employers in Germany:

  1. SAP (4.6)
  2. Infineon Technologies (4.5)
  3. Robert Bosch (4.4)
  4. Daimler (4.4)
  5. Capco (4.4)
  6. Fraunhofer Society (4.4)
  7. BMW (4.4)
  8. HelloFresh (4.4)
  9. MHP - A Porsche Company (4.4)
  10. Continental (4.3)

With an average score of 4.6, SAP knocked last year's winner Bain & Company (16th place) out of first place and took the top spot among employers in Germany for the second time since 2017 (previous year: 3rd place).

Infineon, a former winner (2016), is also in second place, with the chip manufacturer moving up two places compared to the previous year. Robert Bosch is in third place for the third time after 2016 and 2017, but improved by eight places compared to 2018 (then 11th place).

All four car manufacturers in the list of Germany's best employers for 2019 improved their ranking compared to the previous year: Daimler (rank 4), BMW (rank 7), Audi (rank 12) and Volkswagen (rank 13) all made up ground.

A total of 20 out of 25 companies have already received at least one award in the past four years - newcomers to the list include the consultancy Capco (5th place) and the Berlin unicorn HelloFresh (8th place).

The majority of the top 25 employers of the year are German companies, with the south of the country dominating: 11 of the 16 German employers come from Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg.

How employees can rate companies on Glassdoor

When an employee submits an employer review on Glassdoor, they are asked to list the pros and cons of working for the company in question. In addition, the employee is encouraged to give advice to management and asked how satisfied they are with the employer in general.

The following can be rated

  • the managing director
  • Career opportunities
  • Remuneration & benefits
  • culture & values
  • the managers
  • work-life balance.

Employees are also asked whether they would recommend their employer to a friend and what their business forecast is for the next six months. The average overall rating of the more than 830,000 employers is 3.4.
