The IIoT strategy

The process industry is still in its infancy when it comes to Industry 4.0 and digitalization. Benedikt Schumann, Product Manager Industry 4.0, explains how Endress+Hauser is helping users here.

Benedikt Schumann: "To bring the knowledge of online applications into the field, we offer Ex-capable industrial tablets. We are also evaluating mixed reality glasses so that users will have both hands free for maintenance and servicing in the future."

To show users how they can unlock the digitalization potential of their company at field level, Endress+Hauser is focusing on new online services under the motto 'EmpowerTheField'. The 'digital services' build on each other and focus on recording, managing and maintaining the installed field device base.

The online application 'Analytics' helps customers to find out which devices are installed and which of them are process-critical or have been decommissioned, for example. Device management is based on the prior recording of all field devices in production. Endress+Hauser provides a fully automated solution for this using an Edge Gateway.

Since every minute counts in the event of a critical device status or an unexpected device failure, the online application 'Health' provides the causes and measures for current diagnostic messages, which reduces the time-consuming and time-critical procurement of information to a minimum.

Building on these online services, Endress+Hauser intends to focus on the predictive maintenance of field devices and processes.
Overall, the digitalization portfolio has been designed to be as modular as possible. Designed like a toolbox, it consists of sensors and connectivity components as well as online services and apps for various end devices.
Endress+Hauser relies on the cloud to provide the digital data of smart sensors from the field level: "The integration of sensor data into our cloud platform is certified with the EuroCloud certificate at four-star level, which is the highest security level of process automation that no other company has yet been able to achieve!" Benedikt Schumann proudly emphasizes. "With our connectivity solution to the cloud, we open up a second channel parallel to the customer's process control, so that the system control, i.e. the operational system, remains untouched."

The cloud platform also offers the option of storing relevant field data online. Users or third-party providers can in turn access the stored data via a standardized REST API interface. The interface also makes it possible to provide the digital twins of the field devices. These consist of historical life cycle data, for example from the development and manufacturing process. Data records from 47 million installed devices are stored on the Endress+Hauser servers for this purpose.

At the trade fair stand, visitors will be able to test the applications live on industrial tablets and with mixed-reality glasses and experience what Industry 4.0 feels like in everyday use.
