Sports shoe with intelligent cushioning

Students at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are working on a smart sports shoe with variable cushioning that adapts to the runner and the ground conditions. This is made possible by a concentrated load of automation technology in miniature.

Modern sports shoes have to meet increasingly stringent requirements - whether for professional or leisure use. In addition to workmanship, design and image, the right cushioning also plays a major role if the wearer wants to protect their joints. KIT students have tackled this problem. Their goal: a running shoe with variable cushioning for an appropriate load on the joints.

The cushioning of the shoe depends on the wearer's body weight and training condition as well as the ground conditions. This "all-rounder" called 'JointWatchR' is intended in particular for ambitious joggers with several pairs of shoes for field, forest and concrete surfaces.

The 'JointWatchR' project has already brought the students two successes in the past year: firstly at the German microsystems technology competition 'Cosima' and secondly at the international 'iCan' competition.
