From Digital Lockout-Tagout to AI
tec.nicum, the service division of the Schmersal Group, is showcasing a significantly expanded service portfolio, particularly in the area of new digital technologies. Bruno Diniz, Head of tec.nicum – Solutions & Services, shares the details.
Mr. Diniz, you want to expand tec.nicum's offerings. Why is that?
Digitalization and concepts like Industry 4.0 are transforming manufacturing processes. This means we need to support our customers with new technologies and adapted service solutions. Think, for example, of the increasing share of software functionalities within devices and the growing digital exchange of data and documentation. Moreover, we've found that our customers are looking not only for isolated services, such as risk assessments or safety concepts for single machines, but for comprehensive solutions that also consider and assess the entire value chain. Additionally, multinational corporations—our clients—operate production facilities across countries and continents and seek unified safety solutions and standards. Given these trends in demand for safety services, we have strategically realigned and expanded our service portfolio, now offering technologies like IIoT and cloud solutions.
What specific new services are you offering?
Primarily, we've added two new components to our previous four service modules: digitalization and outsourcing. The digitalization module involves digital solutions that go beyond safety technology to support customers in implementing Industry 4.0 concepts and achieving sustainability goals. For example, we offer various platforms and systems that allow customers to visualize, analyze, and assess a wide range of production data. This includes video analysis systems, automated quality assurance systems, and energy management tools. In terms of workplace safety, we now offer the video analysis system ‘tec.iara’—Artificial Intelligence for Accident Reduction—a visual AI-based safety monitoring system that can detect accident risks in real-time by observing interactions between people, objects, and the work environment.
Also new in tec.nicum’s service portfolio is tec.dloto - Digital Lockout-Tagout. This software provides digital support for monitoring the Lockout-Tagout process, which prevents workplace accidents by fully disconnecting machines from their power sources temporarily. The software minimizes human error by making information readily available for each device and isolation point.
And what does the Outsourcing module involve?
With outsourcing, we offer complete solutions - from pre-assembled control panels to integrated safety solutions that analyze the entire value chain. The aim is always to improve and simplify our customers' processes, for instance, by supporting product development and optimizing products through co-design. Throughout the product development phase, we identify areas for improvement or transition to plug-and-play systems, allowing faster product delivery and installation. Ultimately, we aim to help our customers reduce operational costs.
Are there any organizational changes?
tec.nicum is now not just a business unit but an independent, wholly-owned subsidiary of the Schmersal Group, with our headquarters in Kirkel-Limbach, which was the location of the former company omnicon engineering, now integrated into tec.nicum – Solutions & Services. We also have an office at Schmersal’s main headquarters in Wuppertal, as well as central locations in Brazil and India outside Germany. Globally, we currently employ 162 staff—and growing.
