Zero Trust in OT/IT environments

Siemens and Zscaler cooperate

The aim of the cooperation between Siemens and Zscaler is to enable secure and needs-based remote access to OT systems without exposing the OT network to an increased threat potential.

Enabling users to securely access OT systems and applications in the production network from their workstation in the office or on the move is the declared aim of the cooperation between Siemens and cloud security provider Zscaler. The aim is to enable users to carry out quality assurance measures or diagnostics remotely, for example.

To this end, the cooperation partners have expanded the 'Defense-in-Depth' concept with the Zero Trust architecture. Based on the 'Least Privilege Access' principle, Zero Trust only authorizes application-specific access for which there are verified authorizations based on user identity and context. In combination with the existing OT security mechanisms, such as cell protection firewalls, a granular access concept can thus be implemented. In addition, the requirements of production for availability and real-time capability can still be met. This is implemented by installing the app connector of the cloud-based remote access service Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) on a Docker container on the local processing platform Scalance LPE from Siemens, creating an access solution for industrial environments. By centralizing management in the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange cloud platform and using outbound connections, existing firewall rules can be configured more restrictively and operating costs for administration and monitoring can be reduced. Existing systems can also be easily retrofitted thanks to the Zero Trust Exchange platform. The offer is available immediately through Siemens and Zscaler.
