India withdraws planned machinery safety law
The Indian government has completely withdrawn the planned 'Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024'. The law would have created a new legal framework for machinery safety in India.
With the repeal of the law, all planned new safety and approval obligations for manufacturers and importers no longer apply with immediate effect.
On January 14, 2026, the Ministry of Heavy Industries revoked the underlying notification S.O. 3649(E) dated August 28, 2024. The decision was published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary and is based on Section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. With this step, the government is providing short-term clarity and taking the pressure off a regulatory project that had caused uncertainty in the industry due to unresolved implementation issues and unclear deadlines. Pilz will continue to keep a close eye on the development of international standards and regulatory requirements for machinery safety and will provide information as soon as new requirements emerge.
