Safer Internet Day" campaign day
Educate about dangers on the net
How do I stay safe online? This question is the focus of a day of action on internet safety. In Saxony, there are both online coaching sessions and events in schools.
Safer Internet Day educates pupils, teachers and parents about the pitfalls of the web and social media services. According to the Ministry of Culture, both Saxony-wide online coaching sessions and prevention events in schools have been prepared for this year's campaign day on Tuesday. The "Safer Internet Day" events are being coordinated by the State Office for Schools and Education.
The Adolph-Diesterweg School in Leipzig received a visit from two police officers from the Leipzig police's specialist prevention service to mark the day of action. Among other things, they explained to the special needs pupils how data flows, what traces are left behind when surfing or how criminals disguise identities on the Internet.
"Our prevention events are important because we show the children How do I behave on social media, what can these apps that I use every day do, where do my photos end up, where does what I supposedly send to my best friend every day end up," said police prevention expert Rico Reichel (48).
According to school principal Christian Geitner, the importance of digital media in the lives of children and young people can hardly be overestimated. Its significance is extremely high, said the 38-year-old. Digital natives are growing up. "But that doesn't automatically mean that they are able to assess the consequences of their actions at a young age," said Geitner. Sometimes a crime is just a click away.
According to the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, demand for the "Safer Internet Day" prevention offers is high. The Saxony-wide coaching sessions have been expanded accordingly in recent years. Safer Internet Day was launched in 2004 as an EU initiative. It is held annually on the second day of the second week of the second month.
