Rising fraud figures - Germany defies the trend

For Cybersecurity Month, the Adyen Index 2025 shows how differently digital forms of fraud are developing worldwide. While cases of fraud on the consumer side are increasing massively in some markets, they are falling slightly in others, such as Germany.

The global financial technology platform Adyen surveyed consumers and companies in 23 countries for the study. The result is clear: fraud is a global problem. With the progress of AI, the scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

In Canada (+223 %), the UK (+144 %) and the Netherlands (+129 %), incidents of consumer fraud rose particularly sharply. In Germany, Spain, Portugal and Japan, however, they fell slightly. German consumers lost an average of 763 euros, compared to 811 euros in the previous year.

AI is changing the fraud landscape

Since 2022, the use of AI has fundamentally changed everyday life and therefore also the world of fraud. Cyber criminals use AI to create deceptively real phishing emails, smishing messages (SMS) or vishing calls (telephone fraud). According to a report by SlashNext, the number of malicious phishing emails has risen by around 1,265 percent. What used to fail due to spelling mistakes now looks like professional marketing and is sent on an industrial scale. Traditional security checks are becoming less and less effective.

Many affected, few big losers

The Adyen Index 2025 shows the financial burden of fraud on retailers:

  • 22% of retailers in Germany reported losses of over 1 million euros in the past 12 months.
  • Around 7% even recorded losses of over 5.9 million euros.
  • 63% reported lower losses of up to 714,000 euros.

Fraud therefore affects many, but to very different degrees. Chargebacks also remain a key burden: 33% of German retailers state that up to 10% of their fraud-related losses were caused by chargebacks, and for a further 56% the proportion is even higher than 10%.

Hella Fuhrmann, Country Manager DACH at Adyen, explains: "AI has fundamentally changed the fraud landscape - for fraudsters as well as for those who need to protect themselves. Only those who use technology intelligently can effectively protect themselves and their customers. With Adyen Uplift, we help companies to detect fraud at an early stage while ensuring a seamless customer experience."
