Review of the 'Expert Days on Service Robotics'

"Human meets Robotics" - this was the motto of Schunk's 9th 'Expert Days on Service Robotics'. It became clear that international standards are needed for robot-supported assistance systems to become a matter of course in everyday industrial life.

For two days, 22 international speakers presented research projects, innovative technologies and applications from the world of assistance and service robotics at the symposium for applied service robotics.

The two chairmen of the two-day event organized by Schunk, Martin Hägele from Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart and Dr. Anders Billesø Beck from the Danish Institute of Technology, as well as the speakers from a total of nine countries, left no doubt: the foundations of service robotics have long since been laid, the number of applications is increasing rapidly and the focus today is increasingly on specific tasks in everyday industrial life. At the same time, there is a growing need for multifunctional systems that can be used profitably in the long term.

Over the course of the event, it became clear time and again how important it is to consistently coordinate the development of physical and cognitive interaction in the future. After all, the service robotics community believes that the key to future success lies above all in intensive cooperation between the individual disciplines. Only in this way will it be possible to create intelligent service robot solutions that meet the high demands of the automotive industry, for example. While many operations have so far been viewed exclusively in isolation, integrated solutions will be increasingly in demand in the future. In other words, the isolated view of gripping, for example, will become a complex view of gripping in the immediate vicinity of humans. The focus is primarily on safety and intuitive programming, but also on predictive interaction with humans, which requires particularly complex algorithms. Mechanical components, sensors, software, communication within the systems and the interface to the user are increasingly understood as a unit. According to the panel of experts, it is clear that the speed of development in service robotics is extremely high and offers a great deal of potential for committed companies.
